Discord

Japanese musician and composer Ryuichi Sakamoto has a 1997 classical composition entitled DISCORD. In the fourth movement, "Salvation," he asks a few (uncredited and famous) people what salvation is to them, and their responses are used in the piece against music. Laurie is the first to be heard and she speaks for about two and a half minutes. For those who have not heard this, here's what she says. There's only one word I can't understand one word she says at the end, but I'm sure you can figure out what she means.

"First, salvation is an ongoing process. The first time I was saved was, uh, when I was eleven: Billy Graham. I don't know if you can appreciate now the charisma of Billy Graham, who just goes, uh, 'Come to me, come to me, come to me. Stand up and come to me.' Now 'Give me your money' was something I didn't understand at that time, but that was really-- This is my new telescope. It really only looks at, uh, New Jersey, it's supposed to look at the stars. So, I came forward and I was saved by Billy Graham. And I was very, very proud of that. But I've tried to be... I've tried to be saved about ten other times in my life. And I still have the illusion that there's a guru somewhere, and so I keep looking. Here's the last one... This picture was taken at, uh, St. John the Divine, where I, uh-- You have here, you have the bishop. He's invited, and the Dalai Lama's come to St. John the Divine, and-- and talk. But also there were other people talking too. I was supposed to give a spe! ech, which was one of the worst moments of my life, to give a speech while the Dalai Lama was in the audience. (laughs) Really, really intimidating. So, uh, especially if you think that this is a person who's, uh, capable of, like, kind of very pure love. So if there's anything about pride, or anything about your ego in what you're saying, it makes you feel very (?); I felt very (?). So that's my salvation story."
