What is Artificial Intelligence?
Artificial Intelligence (or A.I.) is the study of cognition and
thought in artificial systems (usually computer programs.) It is
considered one of the main branches of computer science. The ultimate
goals of AI are to create or surpass human-level intelligence in
machines, and understand intelligence in the abstract.
I have an ongoing project to collect different people's definitions of AI:
- "AI is the study of techniques for solving
exponentialy hard problems in polynomial time by exploiting knowledge
about the problem domain." --Elaine Rich, cited on page 266 in Kurzweil, R. (2005).
